Abstract of doctoral dissertation
The Historical Center of Ioannina as a Cultural Landscape and the interaction of buildings that compose the landscape over time through the use of Geospatial applications and Spatial Analysis methods

The historical center of Ioannina has historically been and continues to be a commercial center and a cultural reference point for the city’s events. This particular part of the city is divided into neighborhoods, each with a distinct condition in terms of activities and building use. Over time, the city has changed form, developed, and expanded, leading to changes in the needs of its citizens.

The present doctoral dissertation aims to highlight the history of the city as a cultural landscape through the use of geospatial methods. The changes from the earliest urban plans of the city, the first uses and the urban layout of buildings will serve as reference points for the research. Subsequent changes caused by the city’s transformation over time are interconnected in such a way that they lead us to the present day with the current situation that prevails. The Historical Center of the city will be analyzed at the level of urban transformation, primarily using methods of spatial analysis and methods from the broader field of geoinformatics.

The key characteristics of Cultural Heritage Landscapes are identified in two categories: tangible and intangible characteristics. Tangible characteristics are those for which there is geographic information or can be created from spatial data, while intangible ones are those that give the city its distinct character, but cannot have a geospatial form, except for information significant to the course of each study. Spatial analysis methods, when applied to the management of cultural landscapes, capture and correlate a multitude of parameters and interdisciplinary data of diverse origins. Finally, the method of conceptualization of spatial relationships (Conceptualization of Spatial Relationships) will be the main methodological pillar for performing spatial correlation of the data and information.
