Documentation & Surveying of the Stone Bridges of Pelion

The Postgraduate Program "Re-use of Buildings and Ensembles" of the Department of Architecture, University of Thessaly, as part of its research activity, is undertaking the documentation and surveying of the stone bridges of Pelion, aiming to highlight and protect the cultural heritage and traditional architecture of the region.

We extend an open invitation to the public and request the contribution of anyone who possesses information regarding the stone bridges of the area.

Specifically, any historical source, personal testimony, vintage photographic material, or information regarding the location of bridges situated in remote or lesser-known sites can prove extremely valuable for their documentation and study.

Stone bridges, key engineering structures of the past that served the communication and development needs of Pelion's settlements, represent today a distinct element of our cultural identity that warrants protection and promotion.

The primary objectives of our research are:

  • Recording and documenting the current condition of the bridges
  • Creating a digital registry using Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
  • Supporting protection and conservation initiatives
  • Exploring possibilities for their re-use and integration into the contemporary environment

We invite you to actively contribute to this effort to help safeguard and promote the richness of our local heritage.
